Booking & logistics

How far in advance should I book?

For weekend portrait sessions, two to four weeks ahead is comfortable. For larger events and weddings (as a second shooter), six to twelve weeks. Cinematic and brand film projects usually require four to eight weeks of planning. If your date is sooner, ask anyway — I will tell you honestly whether I can do it well.

Where are you based, and how far will you travel?

I'm based in Melbourne. Sessions within Melbourne metro are included in the standard quote. Travel beyond Melbourne metro is charged at a flat fee per booking — covering things like fuel, time, and any equipment transport. Interstate and destination work is by arrangement, and I'm comfortable travelling for the right project.

What's your reply time on enquiries?

Every enquiry is read by me personally and replied to within twenty-four hours, often sooner. If you haven't heard back in twenty-four hours, please check your spam folder, and feel free to email hello@kahanistudio.com.au directly.

Do you require a deposit?

Yes. A non-refundable booking deposit of 30% holds your date in the calendar. The remaining 70% is invoiced before or on the day of the shoot. For larger cinematic projects, a different payment schedule may apply — usually a third at booking, a third at midpoint, and a third on delivery.

On the day

How long does a typical session take?

Family and portrait sessions are most comfortable at ninety minutes. Shorter sessions are available but produce noticeably fewer strong photographs. Event coverage is usually three to six hours. Cinematic shoots vary widely — from a half-day brand shoot to a multi-day pre-wedding film.

What should we wear?

Once your booking is confirmed I send a styling guide that walks through colours, fabrics, and combinations that photograph well in the Kahani Studio palette. The short version: muted earth tones, considered fabrics, avoid graphic logos, and pick clothes that you would actually wear to dinner.

For cultural and religious occasions, traditional attire is always welcome and beautifully photographed — saree, lehenga, sherwani, salwar, dastar, hijab, abaya, and so on.

What if it rains?

Melbourne weather is Melbourne weather. Some of my favourite photographs have been taken in light rain. If the weather is genuinely unworkable, we reschedule to the next mutually available date at no charge.

Will you direct us, or just observe?

A bit of both. I will direct lightly — where to stand, where to look, which way the light is best — but I prefer to photograph the moments between the directed poses. If you have no idea what to do with your hands, I will give you something to do with them.

After the session

When will we receive our photographs?

Portrait sessions are usually delivered within two to three weeks. Event coverage takes three to four weeks. Cinematic films take six to twelve weeks depending on the scope. I don't deliver until the work is something I'd put my name to — and I'd rather take an extra week than send a rushed gallery.

How will we receive the photographs?

Through Pixieset — a beautifully designed online gallery that lets you view, share, and download your photographs at full resolution. Galleries remain available for twelve months. Prints can be ordered directly from the gallery if you'd like.

Can we get the RAW files?

I deliver high-resolution, fully-edited JPEGs that are ready to print, frame, and share. RAW files are not part of the standard delivery — my edit is part of the work you're hiring me for. If you have a specific reason for needing RAWs, ask, and we can discuss.

Will our photographs be used for marketing?

I may feature select photographs on the Kahani Studio website, Instagram, and YouTube. If you would prefer your photographs not to be used publicly, just tell me at booking — there is no penalty and no awkwardness. Your photographs are yours first.

Pricing & payment

Why aren't your prices on the website?

Because every brief is different. A maternity session in a park and a family session for fifteen people across two locations require different time, different equipment, and different post-production. I'd rather quote you fairly for what you're actually planning than show a number that won't quite fit.

The studio sits at the mid-market range for Melbourne 2026. If that's helpful context, it's a useful sense of where the conversation starts.

Do you offer payment plans?

For larger bookings — pre-wedding films, brand campaigns, multi-day shoots — I'm comfortable arranging a payment plan that splits the balance into two or three instalments. Just ask during the enquiry stage.

What happens if we need to cancel or reschedule?

The booking deposit is non-refundable but is transferable to a future date within twelve months. If you cancel more than 30 days before the shoot, you owe only the deposit. If you cancel within 30 days, the balance is required. Genuine emergencies are always discussed in good faith.

The studio

Do you photograph full weddings?

Not as the primary photographer. I'm available as a candid second shooter alongside your lead wedding photographer — for couples who want a second perspective and an additional set of eyes finding the quieter moments. For full-day primary wedding photography, I'm happy to refer you to Melbourne photographers I trust.

Do you offer newborn photography?

Not yet. I'm building this category through 2026. If you're expecting and want newborn photography, send an enquiry anyway and I'll let you know when bookings open. In the meantime, I'm comfortable photographing maternity sessions and recommending newborn specialists I trust.

Will there be a physical studio space?

A Melbourne studio space is being built and is expected to launch in late 2026. Once it opens, indoor portrait sessions with controlled lighting will be available. Until then, all sessions happen on location.

What languages do you speak at the studio?

English, Hindi, Marwari, and Punjabi. Sessions can be conducted in any of these. I have a particular comfort photographing across the South Asian community in Melbourne — but the studio is open to families from any community.
